Quandella is a term I created by blending the words quantum and mandala. I use quantum to evoke the vibrational dimension of frequency and sound, while mandala refers to the ancient practice of creating symbolic geometric forms, often organized within a circle.
My Quandellas are based on the premise that sound, image, and geometry can be experienced as different expressions of vibration. I draw with both hands simultaneously while in a meditative state, allowing lines, symmetries, intersections, and geometric relationships to emerge spontaneously.
Each Quandella becomes a visual sound field. I approach viewing a Quandella much as I approach listening to music. Rather than trying to interpret what the drawing means, we can allow our attention to enter its lines, spaces, centers, repetitions, and movements. For me, Quandellas are visual pathways into what I call primordial sound that exists before it becomes ordinary music, language, or subject to conscious interpretation. Viewing a Quandella becomes a form of visual listening: a way of tuning our attention toward the underlying vibrational experience from which sound, image, and form emerge.
